Week 11 Climate Science

  1. The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.
The big question that was addressed in lab was where do we think different sand came from based on its characteristics. The way that we addressed this was by using a microscope to list traits from eleven different samples of sand. From our observations under the microscope we had to think about and categorize if we thought the sand came from the water, wind, or glacier.
  1. A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.
In Thursday's lecture I learned which sodas float and which sodas sink. This related to the story that we read in class about how to test if the crown was actually pure gold or not. The way to test this is to put it in water and see how much the water rises, and how much it is displaced. Archimedes law is specific gravity is equal to weight in the air divided by the weight in the air minus the weight in the water.
  1. Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:
    1. What did you learn?
From the reading, I learned about all of the different factors that determine if an area is hot or cold. One that I learned about is that wind and air masses affect an area. Wind moves air masses to different areas but the wind masses bring their climate with them. Another interesting factor I learned about was relief. When an air mass goes over something like a mountain it then going to expand and cool.
    1. What was most helpful?
One thing that I found helpful was all of the different ways that the reading related to the K-6 standards. It was really interesting to read about the different impacts climate change has on Iowa and what we can do. However, it was helpful that along with all of this information it included what standard it relates too, which is helpful to a future teacher.
    1. What do you need more information on?
One thing that I need more information on is how climate change is affecting places differently. In this reading it went into detail about how it is impacting Iowa, but how does it differ and impact different places.
    1. What questions/concerns/comments do you have?
What places is climate change impacting and affecting the most?
