Week 10 Rock Formations

  1. The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.
The big question that was addressed in lab was about what are the different layers of earth, and how do plates move. We investigated this by using starbursts to model rock formations. We melted starbursts to demonstrate and see how rock formations are on Earth. We had gone over how there are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. In addition, we went over the answers to the test and about tests.
  1. A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.
In Thursday lecture we learned about rocks and rock formations. I learned that all rocks started as magma and and then the magma cools. When the magma cools it turns into igneous rocks. The plate boundaries can be classified as divergent, convergent, and transform boundaries.
  1. Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:
    1. What did you learn?
One thing that I learned from the textbook reading was about the ring of fire. I have heard this term before but did not know that it was the area in the pacific ocean that is bounded by plate tectonics. This is where most of the Earth's earthquakes and volcanos occur. I also learned that volcanos are formed in three different ways. These three ways being converging techtonic plates, diverging tectonic plates, or over a hot spot.
    1. What was most helpful?
One of the things that was most helpful was the visuals. Seeing the visual of the ring of fire was really beneficial to see what borders and what countries the ring of fire includes. I also think seeing the visuals of the different layers of the Earth were helpful. Especially because it helps show the different thickness of each layer
    1. What do you need more information on?
I would like more information about different theories about the future of the earths rock formations and in what ways the continents are going to move and drift.
    1. What questions/concerns/comments do you have?
How did scientists first discover and figure out information about the different layers of the earth?
