Blog Post Week 8: Earth, Sun and Moon

  1. The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.

In lab we did presentations about all of the different topics. My group had done the presentation on the origin of the earth. I had learned that black holes can grow by taking matter and small stars are more stable and big stars burn a lot faster. I also learned that there are two different pathways for stars.

  1. A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.

I learned that light didn’t happen until about 300,000 years after the big bang which I thought was really interesting. I learned that the small star ends up turning into a white dwarf, and the big star ends up exploding and turning into a black hole. I learned that the reason that we know that the previous sun before our sun was bigger was because timewise and because it had to undergo a supernova and had to explode.

  1. Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:

    1. What did you learn?

One thing that I learned from the press book reading was that Earth was not created from the big bang theory. I had previously thought that all of the planets including Earth were created during this. I also learned that the big bang theory was actually more of an expansion or inflation, and was not actually an explosion. I learned that dust from space is what creates planets.

  1. What was most helpful?

One specific diagram that I found helpful was the timeline at the time. I am a visual learner and being able to see the different important events with the years was something that helps me better understand. Another thing that was most helpful was the life cycle of different stars chart. There are a lot of terms within this article and I found it helpful to see the arrows with the correlation. Another thing that is really helpful is that a lot of the terms are underlined, and you can click on them for a definition of the term.

  1. What do you need more information on?

One thing I would like more information on is about the origin of the planets, sun, and moon. I would like more information on some of the different theories about how these were created, and how different scientists came to the conclusion that this was how the planets were formed.

  1. What questions/concerns/comments do you have?

What is a more in depth timeline of the big bang and all the other planets being created and how?
